The Arts as a hobby is extremely rewarding because finished projects can be displayed for all to see and/or hear. Either you have created something to be seen in the Visual Arts or something to be experienced in the Performing Arts.
Whether you draw, sketch, paint, airbrush, sculpt or write, your satisfaction comes upon the completion and sharing with others. Your piece will stand out and be a sign of your emotional expression. There will be special meaning to you and some off the mark interpretations from others. You will spark conversation and motivate introspection. Or you might just get a bunch of weird looks and people trying to be nice. Whatever the case, you have created. Something of beauty and satisfaction from nothing, so to speak.
We are going to focus on the written arts first. Literature in many forms starts with an idea. It develops and grows with each refinement and rewrite. Writings difficulties stem from a continuous strain to produce related patches of work to be complied together for a macrocosmic meaning. It will have numerous micro thoughts but in the end run the audience will need continuity. Novels, short stories, poetry and screenplays all have connectivity. If Emily Dickinson had written about death in one poem then to be followed by a poem which subject matter was fluffy bunnies, readers would have let out a big "Hmmm..." and probably put her book down. Sticking to your personality gives the readers a sense of understanding you.
You can do one of the major four, play an instrument, sing, dance or act, or you can try one of the unique performance hobbies like storytelling, magic, juggling or puppeteering. Either way you are unique in the fact that you are a performer. You get a thrill out of getting up in front of people and performing your hobby rather than just demonstrate it. Your hobby is the performance. Many other hobbyists may not even care if other people know what they do. Many can be happy with their hobby in solace. But Performing hobbyists will not enjoy themselves without an audience. The performers in the two included clips would not have done well in the business if they didn't have that performing "gene". So, if you haven't, join a local theatre group. There are community groups in almost every town. If there is not a theatre group, then let us know and we will get on the road to starting one.
