What is a Social Hobby? These particular hobbies revolve around the world of Social Science. Participation and observation of group settings, social mass communication and editorialization, and learning and experiencing the Arts.
It is a strange group to try to understand but it stems from people stating that throwing dinner parties is their hobby. It is not as much about the "dinner" but more about the "party". Here they are broken down into three categories; Group Environments, Social Communicators and Extended Learning.
Another aspect to Social Hobbies is Social Communication. This includes Blogging and Amateur Radio. This hobby takes form when someone is reaching out to an undetermined other. Generally the communicator is taking a risk by establishing who they are first and seeing who responds. These hobbies have a great reward when they develop responses. The blogger that makes a statement about the current political position of Egypt will be fulfilled when others reach out and give their opinions, which were motivated by the Blogger. Leon Wilson, an Amateur Radio (Ham Radio) operator always referred to the turning on of his equipment as a lottery of "Who's Out There?" And when he would reach someone, from Spain, Germany, Argentina and even the Philippines, he would find common ground for their conversation.
The last Social Hobby group concerns itself with the desire to learn even when it is not necessary. Some people will learn to play an instrument even if they never plan on performing, or another will learn a language to a country they never plan to visit. Extended Learning are hobbies that simply serve to quench our thirst for knowledge, however irrelevant it may seem to our lives. I have a friend that takes rubbings from tombstones. Not a lot of information on tombstones but it starts her on an inquisitive path to whom is buried in that particular spot. They are of no relation to her, yet she is compelled to find out more. The best Extended Learning hobby we plan to feature soon is Travel. What a way to broaden your mind, even if there is no value to you immediately, the experience can enrich you forever.
In this Social Hobby circle of Group Environments you will find the viewing and listening to music, movies, theatre and sporting events. Again, it is not about the actual item being watched as much as it is being in the group setting. For example, going out to the movie theatre to be part of the group is more of the hobby than seeing the movie, The dynamics of the hobby fall into play while interacting with the environment and other people. If you were to sit home every Friday night and watch a movie alone, it would be less of a hobby. On the bright side you can call the collecting of the movies you watch a hobby. In addition to these Social Hobby profiles you can include Reenactments,Going Out to Eat, Tea Tastings, Shopping and Garage Sale Hopping.
